"What have you been doing?"
My resume says that since 2014 I've been doing contracts and freelance. It's true. Mostly it's been small projects and helping out for a few months. Mostly I've been a stay-at-home parent, with some work on the side. I also started treatment for mental health issues that went unchecked for too long. I ended my marriage that was not working out like I had hoped. It's been a rough few years.
However, I have helped existing skills sharp through pet projects and small contracts.
In February 2020, I had to leave the contract I was on because the stress was too much for me. Between personal issues and it being my first foray back into full time work, it was too much. I've been working on myself, how my life is running, and am I going to keep trying. I am looking for work that my current skill set matches and hoping I can be given a chance.
Many companies have continued down a path I had hoped they wouldn't while I was away from web development (at least from a full-time work point of view). So my struggle with re-entering the workforce is: training to meet this practices I don't agree with or training a new specialty.
I'm going to try to build something that matches my ethics in the mean time, while I figure out which way to train.
